To register a trade mark across the entire European Union, the most efficient method is to file a European Union Trade mark (EUTM) application. This application covers all 27 EU Member States. The registration process typically takes about 4-5 months, so long as there are no objections.
The EUTM provides protection in every EU member state. A single similar trademark in any member state can lead to the rejection or cancellation of your application.
A trade mark is only protected in the countries where the application has been filed and accepted.
For this reason, we strongly recommend registering your trade mark in the countries where you currently trade, or where you hope to sell your products and services in the future.
If you have a product based brand, it is also important to trade mark in the country where your products are manufactured.
No. A trade mark is only effective in the country where the trade mark is registered. However, there are several international conventions which assist clients who wish to register a trade mark in more than one country with one single application – this is more cost effective than obtaining separate national registrations. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a global trade mark. Trade mark registration is only valid in the jurisdictions (countries) where an application has been filed and accepted. As a result, we strongly recommend registering the trade mark in markets where you currently sell or wish to sell your products and services in the future together with the country that your products are manufactured in.
Yes, it is possible to own a trade mark in multiple countries, and many companies do. However, this is typically achieved by owning separate trade marks in each country, since trade marks generally don’t apply across borders (the only exceptions are multi-country jurisdictions, such as the EU or Benelux).
Different rules apply in different countries, and where one country’s IP office might accept your application, others might refuse it or require changes that affect the level of protection. Generally, you won’t be able to apply outside of your country of residence without the help of a legal representative (with some exceptions).
Additionally, when applying for a trade mark in multiple countries, the cost of registration will add up.

There is no such thing as a world wide trade mark. Registering a trade mark in every country would cost thousands of pounds even if you intend to do this yourself. However, most businesses only need to register in countries where they operate or plan to expand.
