‘Britain’s Best Small Business Name’ 2024: Winner Announced!

Your business name isn’t just a label; it’s a vital asset. It’s the first impression you make on potential customers, the cornerstone of your brand identity, and, importantly, it’s your intellectual property. But what happens if someone else decides to use a similar name, causing confusion among customers or, worse, intentionally capitalising on your hard-earned reputation? This is where the importance of protecting your intellectual property comes into sharp focus.

At National Business Register, we understand the intricacies of safeguarding your intellectual property, whether you have a punny name that you wouldn’t want others in your industry to copy, or you have your sights set on global expansion, we’re able to help.

Insurer, Simply Business has highlighted the importance of a good name by launching its annual ‘Britain’s Best Small Business Name’ competition to find the UK’s punniest small business name. Business owners have the opportunity to win the title along with a £2,500 cash prize. Award winning comedian and writer, Darren Walsh, was a judge to determine the shortlist, with the winner being picked by the voting public. The voting closed on 13th May 2024.

Previous winners have included the likes of ‘Perky Blenders’ an independent, specialty coffee roaster in East London and and Eggucation, a chick hatching business.

And the 2024 winner is… SureLock Homes

SureLock Homes has been announced as the winner of the punniest name competition launched by Simply Business... Hasting based Locksmiths, Surelock Homes, has claimed the title and £2,500 cash prize.  After comedian Darren Walsh selected the shortlist, more than 2,500 people voted for their favourite name in the competition.

Why is this important?

Research has revealed that 51% of consumers are more likely to shop at a small business with a funny or witty business name. So, this is certainly something that needs to be considered. Additionally, a witty business name may be more easily remembered, particularly helpful when being recommended by others.

As a business owner, you often pour your heart and soul into building your brand, crafting a unique identity that sets you apart from the competition. But without proper protection, your business name is vulnerable to exploitation. Imagine a rival company adopts a strikingly similar name, capitalising on your success and potentially diverting customers away from your business, costing you much more than a competition and a £2,500 cash prize.

Another issue a business owner can come up against is that their name means a lot to them, but it is a name that is not distinctive enough to be trade marked offering the business exclusive use. In this case, NBR are able to offer Business Name Protection. This shields you against passing off in the UK. It’s a cost-effective solution that provides peace of mind, safeguarding your business name and reputation without breaking the bank.
