Unfortunately, scams targeting business owners are on the rise – and intellectual property (IP) scams are no exception.
We’ve recently been made aware of a scam involving a company claiming to be “Cromford Law – Intellectual Property Solicitors.” This group is not who they claim to be. They are impersonating a legitimate law firm, using cloned contact details and even referencing real addresses to appear credible. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has now published a scam alert, which you can read here: Cromford Law Scam Alert – SRA.
How does the scam work?
The scam company is cold-calling or emailing businesses, often claiming to represent them regarding intellectual property matters such as trade mark renewals, infringement notices, or even new filings. They may use language that implies urgency or legal action, and pressure you into paying fees or handing over sensitive information.
This is not a one-off. Sadly, these types of scams are increasingly sophisticated. Other common tactics include:
- Fake invoices for trade mark renewals
- Notifications claiming your IP has been “breached” or “stolen”
- Unsolicited offers to “protect” your brand in multiple countries
- Imitation of legitimate government agencies or firms
- Don’t respond immediately. Take time to verify the source.
- Check the contact details – look for inconsistencies in email addresses or phone numbers.
- Search the name online along with the word “scam.”
- Consult a trusted IP provider (like us!) before taking any action.
- Report it – to the SRA, Action Fraud or the relevant authority.
